The Radio Noir Series is back at Trius Winery, taking audiences on a trip back in time to the golden age of radio.
Series producers Barbara Worthy and Patty Jamieson, joined by some of their acting friends including some Shaw Festival fan favourites, are staging the special event at the Niagara-on-the-Lake winery on Friday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 10. This year they are presenting Miracle on 34th Street as a as a dramatic reading with actors in costume, on a set that gave an authentic feel of what a radio station would have been like when they recorded shows in the ‘40s and ‘50s, right down to a foley artist providing live sound effects.
“These radio shows were often the major form of entertainment back in the day, before families had TVs,” said Worthy. “The superstars of the day would perform adaptations of their great movies, or develop long running series of their own. Radio was the most important means of communication, and audiences today still love its charm. And they’re such fun to do.”
Miracle on 34th Street is the 1947 radio adaptation of the story of how the real Santa Claus goes to work at Macy’s toy department in New York City.
The Radio Noir Series was first staged at Trius in 2016, including a presentation of the holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life, along with a variety of other performances. The events received such a warm response, Worthy and Jamieson wanted to bring it back to Trius this year. It provides a different type of atmosphere for those who enjoy the dramatic arts.
“Imagine yourself part of a studio audience of the day, watching a classic radio show being produced, with live music, live sound effects, and actors playing multiple parts,” said Worthy. “Trius Winery’s Radio Noir Series brings it all to life, and with wine, food and good old-fashioned charm.”
This weekend Trius will stage performances on Friday and Sunday. Doors open at 7:15 p.m., with the show at 8. Tickets are $40 a person per show, plus taxes. Ticket includes one glass of wine, one package of snacks, and entrance to the live event. Ages 13 and up are welcome to attend.
