Ten Foot Pole Theatre, a company known for producing award-winning theatre across Canada and overseas, has launched a YouTube channel with its debut short film, PALAU, based on the play by Rob Salerno.
PALAU follows two men as they navigate an estranged friendship over a winter night on the streets of Toronto. When John and Leo reconnect after ten years apart, John surprises Leo with a one-way ticket to Polynesia and an enticing -- or maybe ridiculous -- offer.
The story explores themes of same-sex attraction, unrequited love, and loneliness and explores neighbourhoods and landmarks at the heart of Toronto. Watch the film below, or click here to view it on YouTube if your browser doesn’t support in-mail video.
Shot guerrilla-style by director Warren Wagner (Toronto: The Good and Fresh Start), the short film is the first of a series of planned short films and sketch comedy pieces that Ten Foot Pole plans to release over YouTube.
“This is a film about the tension between the difficulty and necessity of maintaining the fantasies we have when we’re young,” says writer and producer Rob Salerno, who also performs in the film.
Ten Foot Pole Theatre has produced plays in Toronto, across Canada, and overseas since 2007. Its notable successes include the twice Dora-nominated First Day Back, and the coast-to-coast sell-out hit Fucking Stephen Harper, both written and performed by Rob Salerno. The play Palau debuted at Toronto's Social Capital Theatre as part of the 2016 Short Shorts Festival.
