Cineplex Events brings Antoinín Dvořák’s Rusalka live from New York City’s Metropolitan Opera to theatres across Canada on February 25th at 12:55 p.m. ET as part of The Met: Live in HD series.
Kristine Opolais plays the mythical Rusalka, a role that vaulted her to stardom and helped to launch her career internationally through her haunting rendition of the classic “Song to the Moon.” According to a recent review in The New York Times, Opolais “gives a vocally lustrous and achingly vulnerable performance” in The Met’s current production under the direction of visionary Mary Zimmerman, who brings her wondrous theatrical imagination to Dvorák’s fairytale of love and longing, rejection and redemption. Jamie Barton, recent recipient of the 12th annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young singers, is also receiving accolades for her performance as Ježibaba. Rounding out the all-star cast is Brandon Jovanovich, Katarina Dalayman, Eric Owens and Sir Mark Elder, who according to the Huffington Post conducts “a magnificent rendering of the composer’s lush score.”
Antoinín Dvořák’s Rusalka had its world premiere at the National Theatre in Prague in 1901. The production proves itself as an example of late Romanticism – containing folklore, and evocations of the natural and the supernatural worlds. The story has universal appeal, infused by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué’s romantic Undine (previously set as an opera by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Tchaikovsky and others) and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid.
In addition to the spectacular performances and direction, the lush fantastical world of Rusalka could not have come to life without the vision and expertise of The Met’s costume shop. For a behind-the-scenes look into the creative workings of this magical studio, click here.
Rusalka will be broadcast in Czech language with English subtitles. If you miss the live showing, you can catch an encore show on April 8, 10, and 12, 2017 at select Cineplex theatres across the country. For theatre locations and showtimes visit Cineplex.com.
