Coal Mine Theatre closes a powerful #Season3 with ORPHANS, an unsettling drama by British playwright Dennis Kelly (co-writer Matilda the Musical). ORPHANS premiered at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh in 2009 and won a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Making her Coal Mine debut is Canadian director Leora Morris, currently serving as the Yale Directing Fellow at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia.
Danny and Helen have an unexpected visitor when Liam shows up, covered in blood, in this chilling exploration of violence and racism in urban society. Liam’s claim he offered assistance to an unconscious stranger bleeding in the street is soon exposed as an alt-fact. ORPHANS shakes up the preconceived notions of morality, loyalty and honesty while trying to keep quiet the violence and evil that lurks inside everyone. “Dennis Kelly‘s play grips you tight, like a mugger in a knife-point robbery.” The Telegraph
The close-knit cast features Coal Mine’s co-founder and Co-Chief Engineer Diana Bentley (Bull, Instructions/Coal Mine) as the fiercely loyal Helen, recent National Theatre School graduate Tim Dowler-Coltman (Skylight/The Berkeley Street Theatre) as her brother, the troubled Liam, and Nova Scotia transplant David Patrick Flemming (A City, Bunny/Stratford Theatre festival) as her conflicted partner, Danny.
Coal Mine Theatre, a new independent theatre in Toronto’s east end, founded by Chief Engineers Diana Bentley and Ted Dykstra, proudly presents its third season of fearlessly challenging plays, produced, directed, designed and performed at the highest possible level. With less than 100 seats available per performance, the Coal Mine is inspired by the intimacy and excitement of the off-off-Broadway experience.
