Stage Door News
It is with great sadness we share the news that beloved Canadian actor Richard McMillan passed away on Sunday, February 19 in Toronto after a long struggle with thyroid cancer. He was 66. Recently seen on stage here in Tarragon’s An Enemy of the People, Richard enjoyed a prolific stage career in theatres across Canada, England, and the United States, in addition to many film & television roles.
Tarragon Theatre is honoured to host a memorial event for Richard at the theatre (30 Bridgman, Ave, Toronto) on Monday May 15 at 7:00 pm.
Reflecting on McMillan’s career, Tarragon’s Artistic Director and close personal friend Richard Rose shared, “Richard’s acting life took him all over the stages and screens of Canada, from the Tarragon to the Citadel, Stratford to the Princess of Whales. In the roles he took on he was noted for presenting fiercely passionate characters that he illuminated with compassion and, conversely, he was a master of the clown – roles that were at once humorous and sad. As an actor he understood the absurd and the contradictory. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone quite that sad on the stage, and for that the audiences just loved him. You couldn’t take your eyes off him.”
Richard McMillan is survived by his wife Anne Louise Bannon and a daughter, Maggie. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Heritage Funeral Centre in Toronto. The funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Corpus Christi Church, 1810 Queen St. E., Toronto. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be given in Mr. McMillan’s name to either the Canadian Actors’ Fund or Police Athletic League.
