The story of Tony, the talented young guy in a dead-end job from Brooklyn who wants to dance his way to a better life, defined the disco generation. Based on Nik Cohn’s 1975 New York Magazine article “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night” and Norman Wexler’s 1977 film, the musical stage adaptation featured the unforgettable Bee Gees hits and premiered in London’s West End. In 1999 it opened on Broadway and subsequently has had 36 professional productions around the world.
Forty years after the film first burst onto screens, this new production captures the energy, passion and life-changing moments that have thrilled audiences. A new generation of talented actor/singer/dancers, none of whom were even born in 1977, explores the soaring sounds and pulsating rhythms of this coming-of-age for a new generation of theatregoers.
With an all-Canadian cast, Saturday Night Fever - The Musical stars Matt Alfano as Tony Manero, Tessa Alves as Stephanie, and Heather McGuigan as Annette. Featured are Christy Adamson, Jak Barradell, Katie Beethan, Deb Collins, Michael De Rose, Kristin Dobby, Aaron Ferguson, Nicko Giannakos, Ryan Gifford, Sarah Higgins, Galen Johnson, Kyla Musselman, David Rosser, Adam Sergison, AJ Simmons, Justin Stadnyk and Jennifer Thiessen.
Directed by Marcia Kash with choreography by Marc Kimelman and music direction by Steve Thomas, this new production of Saturday Night Fever - The Musical is presented by NorthCore Productions and 2 Luck Concepts LLC. The production began January 7th and is on a 52-week North American tour.
Saturday Night Fever - The Musical is adapted for the stage by Robert Stigwood (who produced the original film) in collaboration with Bill Oaks. This North American version is written by Sean Cercone and David Abbinanti.
The original movie soundtrack remained 24 weeks on the top of the US album charts and remained there until March 1980. In the UK, the album also achieved first place for 18 weeks and is one of the most successful movie sound tracks of all time. It won the 1979 Grammy Album of the Year. In 2003 it reached # 131 of Rolling Stone’s “500 Best Albums of All Time”.
