With Family Day around the corner, a Niagara-on-the-Lake theatre group is hoping to ensure families spend the day together.
Playhouse Theatre Group is set to present its inaugural Fairytale Festival celebration on Monday, Feb. 20, with sessions planned at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Corks’ Playhouse Theatre, 19 Queen St. in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Rob Burke, who founded the nonprofit company with Dina Mavridis, said they wanted to provide more opportunities for families to enjoy events on Family Day. Mavridis came up with the idea of the fairy tale theme, hoping it will appeal to a broad range of youth across Niagara.
“The event is going to be a fun-filled day with so many things to do that will entertain the children and also adults,” said Burke.
The theatre will be transformed into a fairytale experience for each two-hour session. There will be arts and crafts, games, sing-a-longs, performances, a costume parade — those attending are encouraged to dress up, a character meet and greet, interactive storytelling and more.
Admission to the event is $20 for children 12 and under, and any older guests are admitted for $10. Babes in arms, said Burke, will be admitted free.
For an additional cost, there will also be raffles, fairytale-themed snacks available and a pixies and pirates makeup boutique.
The event is a fundraiser for Playhouse Theatre Group. The company’s programs are aimed at encouraging children to build strong relationships among their peers, promoting personal development and educating youth through the theatre and arts.
“So far we have had two theatre camps that have allowed us to sponsor children and youth in the Niagara Region to be part of our theatre camps,” said Burke. “Watching the children gain self-confidence, self-awareness, and being able to go on stage is inspiring and so rewarding.”
Limited space remains for each of the two sessions. They are available online or by calling 289-668-0482. Information on the event, and a link to purchase tickets, is available online at www.playhousetheatregroup.ca.
