David Mirvish is delighted to present the critically acclaimed Why Not Theatre production of BUTCHER by Governor General Award-winning playwright Nicolas Billon and directed by the multi-award winning Weyni Mengesha. Performances begin Saturday March 25 at the Panasonic Theatre. Media night is Tuesday March 28 at 8pm.
Nicolas Billon’s BUTCHER had its world premiere in the fall of 2014 at Alberta Theatre Projects in Calgary, followed by a sold-out Toronto premiere at The Theatre Centre in November 2015.
BUTCHER is a thriller that literally has audience members at the edge of their seats. (Sorry about the use of the cliché, but this time it’s the most accurate description.) Among the play’s unique accomplishments is the creation of a new language in the telling of its story. Primarily in English, the play also has characters speaking Lavinian, a fully developed new language created by Dr. Christina Kramer and Dragana Obradović, two University of Toronto linguists. (Ask them about this new language. They will answer you in Lavinian.)
The Why Not Theatre production of BUTCHER won Best Production in 2016 by the Toronto Theatre Critics. Weyni Mengesha was awarded the Dora Award for Best Direction in 2016.
The Story
Who is the Butcher? A mysterious old man is dropped off at a police station, wearing a foreign military uniform, and a Santa hat, with a meat hook dangling around his neck. As a lawyer, a police officer, and a translator struggle to unravel the truth, they uncover a past that won’t stay buried, and a decades old quest for justice that must be served. Haunted by events a world away, no one is who they seem to be.
BUTCHER stars Andrew Musselman, Miranda Calderon, Tony Nappo, John Koensgen and Kasey Nugent.
Set design is by Yannik Larivée, lighting design by Kimberly Purtell, sound by Thomas Ryder Payne, and costume design by Joanna Yu.
BUTCHER is a Why Not Theatre production, presented by David Mirvish.
