Cineplex Events brings Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata live from New York City’s Metropolitan Opera to theatres across Canada on March 11 at 12:55 p.m. ET as part of The Met: Live in HD series.
In a remarkable career that spanned six decades, Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901) composed a total of 28 operas. His highly acclaimed La Traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel and play La Dame aux Camélias, had its world premiere in Venice, Teatro la Fenice in 1853. The story itself, drawn from Dumas’ youthful affair with the celebrated prostitute Marie Duplessis, is still staged today in its original form in several film and television productions.
In The Met’s rendition of La Traviata, Sonya Yoncheva, singing the familiar role of one of opera’s most beloved heroines, Violetta, exudes “irrepressible vitality and sensuality” (New York Times), opposite Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont. Seasoned conductor, Nicola Luisotti’s conducting is “precise and crisp” (The New York Times) in this classic Met performance.
If opera-lovers miss the live showing, guests can catch an encore show on April 15, 17 or 19, 2017 at select Cineplex theatres across the country. For theatre locations and showtimes visit Cineplex.com. Note that the screenings of La Traviata will be broadcast in Italian with English subtitles.
