This June, KABIN and U.N.I.T Productions invite you to have a little faith….in clowns! – as they present the world premiere of MORRO & JASP IN STUPEFACTION at Streetcar Crowsnest, June 14 – June 24, 2017. MORRO AND JASP’s largest and most complex show to date, MORRO & JASP IN STUPEFACTION tackles the search for meaning in a fully immersive production that employs magical special effects. Additionally, for the very first time, MORRO and JASP share the stage with additional cast members.
Bewildered by the state of the world, Toronto’s beloved Clown sisters, MORRO and JASP, are in search of meaning as they interpret a series of bizarre encounters with mysterious strangers as signs from the divine. They attempt to craft the rules of a new belief system, but have conflicting ideas of what or who they are worshipping. This turns clown against clown and forces the sisters to ask: What does it all mean?
The presentation of this brand new interactive and large-scale performance follows a full year of research into circuses and spectacles large and small in both New York and Las Vegas. A sophisticated marriage of the emotionally vulnerable and revealing clown work MORRO AND JASP are loved for, MORRO & JASP IN STUPEFACTION represents the evolution of MORRO and JASP from the fringe circuit to a larger, more sophisticated art form.
“As a company dedicated to immersive, playful theatre that strives to connect with audiences, we are constantly searching for new ways to expand these skills,” says director and dramaturge Byron Laviolette. “We travelled last year to New York and Las Vegas to immerse ourselves in the theatre of spectacle as we all felt there was a place for our style of work to marry with larger production values and possibilities. This show is going to take everything that people love about Morro and Jasp and amplify the awe and wonderment they create for audiences. Bringing other performers into the mix also contributes to our ability to create a more immersive and complete world on stage – this is an incredibly exciting step for all of us.”
The Canadian Comedy Award and Dora Award-winning team behind MORRO and JASP – Heather Marie Annis (Morro), Amy Lee (Jasp), and Laviolette (Director, Dramaturge) – have created 10 full-length shows over 12 years, including sell-out hits Morro and Jasp do Puberty, Of Mice and Morro and Jasp, Morro and Jasp: Go Bake Yourself (the play that inspired the Award-winning cook book Eat Your Heart Out with Morro and Jasp), and Morro and Jasp: 9-5. MORRO and JASP also performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2015 to rave reviews and sold-out houses.
Annis and Lee are joined on stage in MORRO & JASP IN STUPEFACTION by Anand Rajaram (TomorrowLove, The 39 Steps), Elliott Loran (Ride The Cyclone, Alice Through the Looking Glass), and Sefton Jackson (The Gulliver Project, Figaro).
Byron Laviolette is joined backstage by artistic producer Katherine Rawlinson, producer Brian Goldenberg, associate producer Alan Kliffer, consulting producer Derrick Chua, set and costume designer Robin Fisher, lighting designer David DeGrow, projection designer Montgomery Martin, sound designer Lyon Smith, clown coach John Turner, and movement coach Mary Ellen MacLean.
