Set in modern-day Toronto, the action of LA BOHÈME unfolds at the Tranzac Club: the most comforting dive bar in the heart of the Annex.
In 2011, Against the Grain Theatre burst onto the Toronto opera scene with an innovative interpretation of Puccini’s classic love story. The Italian libretto was translated into an English “transladaptation” which updated the 19th-century Parisian Latin-quarter setting to Toronto’s historic Tranzac Club. Six years later, our new production keeps the Tranzac setting, but introduces a new cast, new set and new costumes with tweaks to the transladaption to make it even more current. La Bohème is directed by AtG Founder and Artistic Director Joel Ivany with Founding Member and Music Director Topher Mokrzewski at the piano.
The 2017 Toronto-set story follows tenor Owen McCausland as Rodolfo, an aspiring screenplay writer with a flighty heart who falls in love with a florist and sewing enthusiast named Mimì, sung by Kimy Mc Laren. Rodolfo's roommate Marcello, an OCAD-trained illustrator sung by baritone Andrew Love, is likewise smitten with Musetta, a visual artist (“I don’t paint; I visualize”) sung by soprano Adanya Dunn.
Rounding out the cast is baritone Micah Schroeder as street musician Schaunard, who is always showing up with snacks and cash; bass Kenneth Kellogg as Colline, a PhD student; and baritone Greg Finney in the roles of Benoît (The Tranzac landlord) and Alcindoro (an investment banker). La Bohème is presented with the collaboration of University of Toronto Opera: the up-and-coming students at the opera department will be featured as the Bohème opera chorus.
Eight performances take place at the Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick Avenue, from May 19 to June 2, 2017, with doors scheduled to open at 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 p.m. start. Due to record-breaking demand, tickets are currently off-sale, but a limited amount of Rush tickets ($35) may be available at the door each performance night — arrive early to line up. The seating is cabaret style, and all tickets are general admission with no assigned seats. Make sure to arrive early and ensure a great seat at “Café Momus” to catch all the romance and action of our Toronto riff on the Puccini classic.
