Festival Players of Prince Edward County has announced their 2017 theatre season including three productions as part of a Summer Repertory Season, an all-Canadian presentation series for the Fall and Winter months, as well as play development and learning opportunities for County theatre artists of all ages.
The Summer Repertory Season features three great selections of Canadian, international and Classical theatre. The season will kick off on August 1st with William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Jeannette Lambermont-Morey (eight seasons at Stratford Festival, award-winning productions at Canadian Stage), performed at the Festival Players’ Village Tent - a new outdoor performance site in Wellington. This new production of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy will feature an exciting cast anchored by veteran actor Bruce Dow as Bottom (12 seasons at Stratford Festival, Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway).
The season will continue with the opening of Stones in His Pockets by Marie Jones on August 9th. This multiple-award winning comedy about a Hollywood film production in a small Irish town seen through the eyes of two local men cast as extras will perform at the Village Tent, directed by Bruce Dow and featuring Geoffrey Armour (Driftwood Theatre’s Taming of the Shrew) and Connor Thompson (The Second City).
And the final play to open will be Mary’s Wedding by Stephen Massicotte, directed by Jeannette Lambermont-Morey and featuring Alex Furber (Mirvish Productions’ War Horse) and an exciting young talent Siobhan O’Malley. This production, opening on August 15th, will christen a new Storefront Studio Theatre on Main Street Wellington. Festival Players will be a founding partner in the development of the intimate new theatre, which will become a cultural hub for the village and the first step towards a permanent home for the company.
Alongside the summer programming, Festival Players will initiate a Theatre in the Community program, offering free activities for local artists and theatre-lovers of all ages. A Cold Reading Series will support play development by featuring readings of works-in-progress by County playwrights. Festival Players’ artists will work with both Wellington’s Backyard Shakespeare Camp and Picton’s Impact Arts Camp to enrich their arts education programming. A final component of the community outreach program will be a series of hands-on theatre workshops offered to learners of all ages and skill levels at the new Storefront theatre.
The final component of Festival Players’ 2017 season announcement is a new presentation series that will extend the company’s activities into the Fall and Winter months. Festival Players Presents will feature an all-Canadian lineup of theatrical presentations both in the Storefront Studio and venue throughout The County.
The first production to be announced as part of Festival Players Presents is Eldritch Theatre’s The Harrowing of Brimstone McReedy, created and performed by Eric Woolfe and originally directed by Dylan Trowbridge, opening on September 26th. The critically acclaimed, mostly true Old Time Terror yarn of a Grifter, the Devil, and cursed Klondike Gold. Told with puppets, con games, and dark parlour magic. The balance of the Festival Players Presents programming will be announced as it is confirmed.
Festival Players is thankful for the support of the Season Presenting Sponsor Huff Estates, Production Sponsor Elizabeth Crombie Royal LePage ProAlliance Realty, and for funding provided by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Arts Council, and the municipality of Prince Edward County.
