2017/18 marks the 15th anniversary season for Studio 180 Theatre, a milestone that prompts us to reflect on our identity. We are pleased to be celebrating this anniversary with our most ambitious season yet; in addition to our ongoing Studio 180 IN CLASS, Studio 180 READS, and Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT programs, we will be presenting two major productions.
In November 2017 we will produce My Name is Asher Lev, based on the novel by Chaim Potok and adapted by American playwright, Aaron Posner. This will be our first partnership with Harold Green Jewish Theatre. In February and March 2018, we will present the Canadian premiere of King Charles III, British playwright Mike Bartlett‘s award-winning play that speculates what happens after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The play is in the Off-Mirvish season at the Panasonic Theatre.
These plays would appear to be dissimilar in every way, but the unifying theme is one of identity.
Asher Lev is a man entering the peak of his career as an artist. Having been raised in a strict Orthodox Jewish family, his compulsion for interpreting his world through images he creates on canvas is forbidden. And try as he might, Asher cannot resist his passion. Charles, too, struggles to define himself rather than acceding to others’ expectations of who he is and what he might become. As the eldest Prince of Wales in British history, he has spent a lifetime waiting for his life to begin. Both men share the struggle to allow their inner impulses an external reality, both accepting that the choices they make do not lead to resolution. We invite you to share these pieces with us as we celebrate our anniversary and look forward to the next fifteen years.

IN DEVELOPMENT: FALL 2017 & SPRING 2018
For a third year, we are making the support and development of Canadian talent a central tenet of our programming. We will once again workshop new plays at various stages of development at two periods, one in the fall and one in the spring. Look forward to the announcement of our playwrights and their projects, as well as dates and times for the readings, in the coming months.
EDUCATION
Last year we reached over 600 students across the GTA through our education program, Studio 180 IN CLASS. We worked with twenty-five groups of students and visited each three times, introducing them to new works-in-progress from our IN DEVELOPMENT playwrights. We look forward to continuing to bring these important workshops to young people in our community, and to sharing our two productions with them.
