Sophia Fabiilli, the playwright behind The Philanderess (NNNNN’s, The Second City Award for Outstanding New Comedy) presents her second play: a black comedy about a grandmother faking her own death in order to reunite her family in a Northern Ontario funeral home.
Nine characters. Five actors. Four doors. Buckle up… because Liars at a Funeral takes sharp corners between light-speed comedy and unexpected heartbreak. Loosely inspired by Hamlet, this brand new Canadian play is about going home, sisters, forgiveness, and… DEATH.
Originally slated to be the closing show of the Storefront Theatre’s 2016/17 Season, a new venue has been successfully secured at St. Vladimir Theatre (620 Spadina Ave, south of Harbord) for this world premiere production, running May 5-14 2017.
Ali Joy Richardson (director/dramaturg) and Laura Jabalee Johnston (producer) have successfully collaborated on their highly acclaimed production of Jenn Silverman’s Still (2016) and their current production of Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House (Alumnae Theatre). Richardson is also known for her sold-out Fringe hits: Jordan Tannahill’s Get Yourself Home Skyler James (2016) and The Dinner Table (2015). Truth’n’Lies is thrilled to collaborate with this powerful pair.
Liars at a Funeral boasts a truly gob-smacking cast. A professional actor, director, teacher, and stalwart of Canadian Theatre for 35+ years, Terry Tweed breathes life into puckish Grandma Mavis. Ruby Joy (Stratford Festival, five seasons) will give an unforgettable performance as polar opposite twin sisters: the ultra-introvert DeeDee and super-overachiever Mia. Indie darling Danny Pagett (recently seen in SLIP; Sex T-Rex Comedy) promises to tickle funny bones as Mia’s rambunctious boyfriend Cam and weirdo mortician Quint. Rhea Akler (recently seen in Rabbit Hole) makes an impressive turn as Evelyn, Mia and DeeDee’s divorcée mother, and Leorah, the funeral home owner with a spicy sex-drive. Completing the ensemble, is John Healy (Insomnia; The Listener; Murdoch Mysteries) who flips on a dime between Bruce, a bull-in-emotional-China-shop dad, and Frank, Evelyn’s “boyfriend”…
