Nightwood Theatre is proud to present the eighth annual Lawyer Show. Directed by Nightwood’s Artistic Director Kelly Thornton and supported by a team of professional coaches, designers, and crew, this unique event sees a cast of 41 lawyers, take the stage to perform Legally Blonde: The Musical, all to raise vital funds that go directly toward Nightwood’s mentorship initiatives, training programs and mainstage productions.
While Lawyer Shows happen across Canada in various regional theatres, Nightwood’s scale is one of the largest in the country. Over the past seven years Nightwood has engaged over 300 lawyer-actors and has raised close to a million dollars. Moreover the engagement has seen off shoots where lawyer alumnae have produced their own Fringe shows, performed stand up comedy, and beyond.
This year’s Lawyer Show is the fabulously fun, award winning musical Legally Blonde. Follow Broadway’s brightest heroine, Elle Woods from her SoCal sorority house, to Harvard Law School, and all the way to the halls of justice as she battles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams.
Director Kelly Thornton says, “This year’s choice of Legally Blonde is fun and fitting - who better to send up the world of law than the law community itself. It’s also perfect for Nightwood, as Canada’s national women’s theatre. This is a bold, brave, hilarious musical, with a powerful and punchy heroine at its centre. I can’t wait to unleash it onto the stage this June!”
The cast of the 2017 Lawyer Show boasts several members of the law community with exceptional experience in the arts. John Sorensen (partner at Gowling WLG, guitar player and leader the Lawyer Show band), is a Grammy Award winning sound engineer who has worked with artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Luis Miguel. Cathy Bate (partner at Miller Thompson, Lawyer Show choreographer and performer) has been choreographing for the stage for 15 years and is a founding member and choreographer of Push Pull Dance Company. The two leads of this year’s production also have extensive experience in the arts – in the lead role as Elle Woods, Courtney Evans is a graduate of Queen’s University’s Arts, Drama & Music program, and holds a masters in musical theatre at the Bosoton Conservatory, and David Sazant (associate at Thompson, Tooze, McLean & Elkin) has worked as an actor for films such as Mean Girls, and TV series such as This is Wonderland and Degrassi: The Next Generation.
