This Month on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor
June on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor is packed with festivals and events, from Yorkville to Bathurst and all along the Corridor in between. We will be at the Annex Family Festival on Sunday, June 11 - please come and say hi to us at the Bloor St. Culture Corridor booth! With concerts, dance, art, museum exhibitions, and fascinating talks at our arts and culture organizations this month, there are tons of fun and interesting ways to enjoy an afternoon or evening on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor and keep discovering the arts and culture our city has to offer.
The Royal Conservatory of Music
At The Royal Conservatory of Music, the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra makes its debut Friday, June 2 at Koerner Hall. The creation of the ensemble is a major initiative by The Royal Conservatory to celebrate the cultural diversity of our great country. The idea was conceived by Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of Performing Arts, and the ensemble is led by Artistic Director David Buchbinder. More than 100 professional musicians from 47 countries applied to be in the orchestra. After auditions, 12 members were chosen, including a Métis Canadian, and musicians from Cuba, Tibet, Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Mexico, Brazil, Greece, Peru, Iran, Ukraine, and China. The artists have been sharing each other's culture and music traditions, composing, and forming a cohesive unit. All of this culminates with the celebratory concert at Koerner Hall on June 2, 2017. The Festival 17 by New Blue Emerging Dance will be at 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education, June 13-17. This jam-packed five-day dance festival will feature seventy performances, twelve films, eight workshops, two parties, and one exhibit. Japan Foundation, Toronto
On June 2, the Japan Foundation, Toronto will be screening animated film The Book of the Dead, the final part of the Tenpyo Art Screening Series which complements the exhibition, Road of Light and Hope: National Treasures at Todai-ji Temple, Nara Photographs by Miro Ito (closes June 28). Want to learn a new language but no time to do it? On June 14, 12pm-1pm, join the Bring your own Bento monthly drop-in lunchtime language lessons. June brings concerts, street festivals and more to the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre! Sunday, June 4, come to the Al Green Theatre for a Toronto Jewish Film Society/918 Bathurst co-presented screening of Sam and Me - a vintage Canadian comedy. Explore The Surprising Side of Ballet at the Monday daytime lecture series. June 7 & 8, the energetic MNjcc Community Choir Annual Concerts performing choral favourites from Leonard Cohen to Eric Whitacre. June 8, TVO's Steve Paikin will discuss his new book at a meet the author event. Attend an innovative performance in the Al Green Theatre by DRUMHAND and Nagata Shachu on June 10. At the 21st Annual Annex Family Festival on Sunday, June 11, enjoy musicians, food vendors, buskers, health and fitness demos, children's activities, theatre and more! Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema
Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema screens Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (opens June 2), Steve James' astonishing David-and-Goliath tale on the only U.S. bank to face criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Score: The Film Music Documentary (opening June 2) brings the greatest film composers in the world to discuss their craft and the power and widespread influence of the film score. Feminist filmmaker and counsellor Attiya Khan opens a brave conversation with her abusive ex-partner from over 20 years ago in the popular Hot Docs 2017 selection A Better Man (opens June 9). Dive into the extraordinarily diverse and delicious world of cuisine in Israel with the most talented chefs and learn about the intersection of cultures that inspires them with In Search of Israeli Cuisine (opens June 16). Three brand new series launch this month: Bob Dylan on Screen (starts June 2), Alternative Facts Survival Guide (starts June 6) and Errol Morris Retrospective (starts June 14). Alliance Française Toronto
This June lots of exciting events are at Alliance Française Toronto. Hear the group Les Petits Nouveaux on June 10 and enjoy exceptional concerts by talented young French artists Frànçois and the Atlas Mountain on June 15 and Fishbach on June 19. Enjoy two beautiful exhibitions: photos from the Lycée Français Toronto's photography competition June 12-16, and I remember: Vimy 100 by photographer Racheal MacCaig, opening June 20. Royal Ontario Museum (The ROM)
Opening June 17 at the ROM is Anishinaabeg: Art & Power, which explores the life, traditions, and sacred stories of one of the most populous and diverse Indigenous communities in North America, through their powerful art over the last two centuries. Also on display is The Family Camera, an exhibition that looks at family photographs as a cultural practice through the lens of migration. Continuing at the ROM is Out of the Depths: The Blue Whale Story, featuring one of the largest, most complete blue whale skeletons ever displayed. The ROM's popular Friday Night Live Presented by Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd. is back, offering visitors a chance to experience the Museum like never before. Istituto Italiano di Cultura
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2017 present FUN by Italian comic artist Paolo Bacilieri. The exhibition features 30 original illustrations from his latest graphic novel Fun, published in English by SelfMadeHero, 10 original illustrations from La Magnifica Desolazione and 10 original illustrations from Sweet Salgari. Closes June 14. On June 9, hear a lecture on The Works of Elena Ferrante on Screen. Dr. Franco Gallippi focuses on the Italian writer's "minor works" adapted for the screen, Troubled Love and The Days of Abandonment. Opening June 20, Toronto-based artist Rino Noto contemplates the ebb and flow of candid human activity in Wave, a new series of portraits. Noto delves into the absurd, abstracting intimate scenes and pulling them out of conventional time and space. Toronto Reference Library
Since Confederation in 1867, more than 17 million newcomers have made their home in Canada. Destination Canada, the upcoming show at the Toronto Reference Library TD Gallery (May 20-July 30), looks at experiences of migration through personal stories and individual circumstances. Why did they choose Canada? What were their first impressions and early experiences? What challenges did they face in starting a new life? What does it mean to become "Canadian"? Discover the stories of newcomers throughout our history through posters, photographs, written accounts and other materials from Toronto Public Library's Baldwin Collection of Canadiana and Chinese Canadian Archive. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra
& Chamber Choir
The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Festival takes over Walter Hall at the University of Toronto with three free concerts on June 4, 5, and 8 presented in conjunction with Tafelmusik's annual Baroque Summer Institute (TBSI). Musical Interlude is a casual noon-hour concert of baroque chamber music performed by members of the TBSI Faculty on June 4 at 12:30pm. Tafelmusik's Thomas Georgi leads the participants of the first TBSI Viola d'Amore Workshop in Many Strings Attached, a recital of solo and chamber works on June 5 at 8:30pm. TBSI Orchestras and Choirs features the participants of TBSI, directed by Jeanne Lamon and Ivars Taurins on June 8 at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this baroque extravaganza. Gardiner Museum
For one night only, four of the city's most exciting young artists will create an interactive environment in which curiosity can be explored to its fullest. Following last year's sold-out debut, the Gardiner Museum presents the second installment of SMASH: Voyeur*ish on Thursday, June 22. Hosted by the Young Patrons Circle and art directed by Justin Broadbent, the event will feature immersive contemporary art installations by Broadbent, Robin Clason, Tessar Lo, and Sammy Rawal, music by Killa Kels, bites by Adrian Niman and Matt Blondin of Food Dudes, and more surprises in store! Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU
In June at the Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU the Metsaülikool/Forest University 50! anniversary exhibition is on display until the end of August. Our official season of lectures and events has come to an end, however, VEMU will be participating in the Annex Family Festival on June 11! The Forest University exhibit will also be available to view at Tartu College during festival hours. For more information visit vemu.ca.
