Driftwood Theatre Group proudly presents a modern retelling of OTHELLO, William Shakespeare's searing tale of race, jealousy and revenge. OTHELLO will visit audiences in 27 communities across Ontario this summer from July 14 - August 13 as part of the annual Bard’s Bus Tour, a touring theatre production that performs outdoors in communities across the province every summer.
The Canadian peacekeeping mission during the Cyprus War of 1974 serves as the backdrop to Driftwood’s production of OTHELLO. “Providing access to live theatre for everyone in Ontario is central to Driftwood’s mandate” says Smith, “with the Bard’s Bus Tour we’re always looking to create theatre which is reflective of the world we live in. With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary this year we wanted to seize an opportunity to explore our important history as a Peacekeeping nation.”
OTHELLO stars rising talent Jordin Hall (Titus Andronicus, The Winter's Tale) as Othello; Dora-nominated Fiona Saunder (Peter Pan) as Desdemona; Driftwood favourite Christopher Darroch (A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Winter’s Tale) as Iago; Dora-nominated Shelly Antony (Scarberia, Little Pretty and The Exceptional) as Cassio; Shakespeare veteran Helen King (Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream) as Brabantio/Montano/Bianca; and Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves as Emilia.
OTHELLO brings together the best in production with the work of award winning Production Designer Nancy Perrin (Deceitful Above All Things, Night Wings); Dora-nominated Movement Director Jennifer Dallas (Kittly-Bender); Lighting Design by Michael Brunet; Sound Designer Tim Lindsay; Composer/Music Director Tom Lillington; Fight Director Todd Campbell; and Stage Manager Victoria Wang (The Circle, Hamlet/All’s Well That Ends Well).
As a special enhancement to this year’s Bard’s Bus Tour, Driftwood has partnered with Fixt Point Theatre on The Cyprus Project, a special audio installation presented prior to all performances of OTHELLO. A collection of firsthand accounts of the Cyprus War of 1974, the project aims to shed light on the personal consequences of international conflicts, as well as Canada’s role in one of the longest overseas missions in our country’s history.
Join Driftwood Theatre for an entire summer of FREE Shakespeare and theatre-related workshops, symposiums, chats, and events for the whole family.
