This summer Libby Brodie Productions brings the Canadian premiere of Permanence direct from London, UK to Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre (30 Bridgman Ave) from July 19 - August 6, 2017 (official opening July 21). The play by Cyd Casados is directed by award-winning Hannah Price in its Canadian Premiere this summer.
“The texture will always be there, underneath, no matter how many coats
you put over it, but I like it that way.”
Rebecca (Samantha Michelle) loves sex – as does Steve (Ludovic Hughes). Inside Steve’s intimate, turpentine-scented studio, Rebecca and Steve’s affair blossoms and implodes in a sensual paint-laden battle of the sexes; but at what point does self-expression become self-harm?
Sex, art and addiction clash in Permanence, a raw and provocative new play asking us if one can ever truly love if one is lying to oneself.
From Freud’s hysteria to incarcerated unwed mothers in asylums … Across history, women who enjoy sex for sex itself have been chastised, classified as hysteric, in need of intervention and even imprisoned. History has taught us women who love sex are mad, bad and difficult to live with. Permanence examines contemporary gender stereotypes, asking why there are still different rules for men and women. Why does the idea of a woman who loves sex still register as radical? And how much have women internalised judgement of their promiscuity?
The Canadian Premiere of Permanence features Canadian actor Samantha Michelle (The Drayton Arms Theatre's Playing With Fire, Atom Egoyan's The Captive, Syfy's Lost Girl, Guillermo del Toro's The Strain) and British actor Ludovic Hughes (Leicester Square Theatre’s Gatsby, Southwark Playhouse’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), written by Cyd Casados (Still Life at the Sushi Bar).
Permanence features direction by Heralds Angel Award, Fringe First and Spirit of Fringe Award-winning director, Hannah Price (The Dead Monkey, Boa, Run the Beast Down) who has directed critically acclaimed work at London’s most prestigious venues and internationally.
This piece is an international collaboration, with the award-winning team of international female theatre-makers bridging London and Toronto. Permanence has its Canadian Premiere at Tarragon Theatre from July 19 - August 6, 2017.
