She Stoops to Conquer is the classic comedy about a whip smart young woman coming of age over the course of the hilarious mistakes of a night at her father's country manor. The play revolves around harmless deceptions by Tony Lumpkin where he tricks two men, George Hastings and Charles Marlow into believing the Hardcastle house, where Marlow intends to marry Kate Hardcastle, into an inn. This wedding-themed comedy is a must watch this summer!
Set against the backdrop of Guild Park's gorgeous Greek- columned Theatre, with costume & set designed by this year's Ontario Arts Council designer award recipient Tamara Kucheran from the Stratford Festival of Canada, this relevant theatre experience will make you laugh and think honestly about the inequalities of the modern western world. How far have we really come since the 1700's?

Message from the Artistic Director
The Guild Festival Theatre returns in 2017 with the 1773 play She Stoops to Conquer by British playwright Oliver Goldsmith. This classic comedy features an empowered young woman taking control over her oppressed societal status in cunning and witty ways. In a similar vein to Hollywood’s popular wedding- themed comedies, She Stoops to Conquer symbolizes the fight for freedom of expression with heart and riotous humour.
This theme seems particularly appropriate for the 150th anniversary of the creation of Canada. Additionally, with nightly wedding receptions booked all summer long in the brand new neighbouring banquet hall, our choice of this play will surely harmonize beautifully with the exciting revitalized Guild Park facilities surrounding our stage. Our triumphant 2017 return will also coincide with the 85th Anniversary of Guild of All Arts.
