Your favourite indie theatre & arts festival is back! SpringWorks - October 12th to the 22nd - is jam packed with entertainment. Look forward to seeing fresh, exciting work: as always, SWF will be a springboard for new works by emerging and established artists.
Can't wait until October? Join us Culture Days weekend, September 29-October 1, for free family fun, art exhibition openings, indigenous dance demonstrations and a chance to meet writers, performers, and get a sneak peek at SpringWorks 2017. See what's happening at #SWF2017!
Theatre:
Each year we manage to outdo the last and 2017 is no exception. Our jury has selected an exciting and eclectic mix of works. Be transported to historic times and alternate sci-fi realities; laugh at hysterical, irreverent comedy; see new takes on Shakespearean classics; and be swept away by honest, soul-baring performances.
Music, Musical Theatre and Cabaret:
Pop favorites, folk and bluegrass, classics, political musicals, cultural mashups, musical storytelling, and a heaping helping of CanCon. There's truly something to make every heart happy.
Puppets:
Fun for the whole family, experience the ancient art of puppetry. These puppets will capture your imagination and steal your hearts. This year we are proud to feature rollicking adventures and sing-a-longs for kids; modernized Commedia dell’ Arte characters; shadow puppets; and true and honourable Canadian wartime stories.
Visual Arts, Digital Arts and Film:
Feast your eyes on Canadian landscapes; contemporary classics; cutting edge digital creativity; intriguing and playful puppet film shorts; and evocative and challenging documentary film. Get creative and a little messy with hands-on family art time.
Poetry and Spoken Word:
Thought provoking, humorous, engaging, entertaining - we invite you to be inspired by this year's poetry and spoken word.
Works in Progress:
SpringWorks is proud to feature works in all stages of development. It is a rare chance to see a work in its early stages. Whether a reading, a partly staged work, or a fully staged performance, you are a crucial part of the creative process. By joining in on the experience, you allow an artist to see their play through the audience’s eyes. Through this partnership, you might just help to shape a future classic.
Dance, Dance Theatre and Clown:
Experience storytelling, visual spectacle, and humour! This year features vaudevillian tap dance, clowning and costume design, multi-disciplinary journeys, modern mixed dance, and spectacular indigenous Hoop Dancing you won't want to miss!
Workshops:
Feeling inspired by the wonderful performances and works? Unleash your creativity at our diverse workshops! You can help create a 10-foot puppet or craft a beautiful lantern with the family; teens can write and perform an impassioned spoken word poem; and all are invited to a gathering to reflect on re-balancing and yielding space
