What Will The Neighbors Say? is excited to announce the Canadian premiere of In Her Own Words: The Diana Tapes . Written by Co-Artistic Director James Clements , the show premiered at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, before transferring to Providence and New York to critical acclaim. This run opens Wednesday, September 20th at the Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen St E, Toronto, ON, M4M 2J5 as a Co-Production with Artistic Director Rosemary Doyle, closing Saturday, October 7th .
The Diana Tapes presents the story of Princess Diana’s secret recordings, and situates them in the context of their time and place; these tapes effectively ended her marriage and shook the monarchy to its core, forming the basis of a biography that changed British history. The play moves swiftly between the book publisher's office, the sitting room where the Princess recorded her darkest secrets onto cassettes, and the dingy West London cafe where one of her best friends surreptitiously handed them over to journalist Andrew Morton. The subterfuge and deception are brought to a terrifying climax that changed celebrity, privacy, and the Windsor family forever. This year, with the 25th anniversary of the multi-million selling book “Her True Story” and the 20th anniversary of the Princess’ death, the WWTNS? team feels that this powerful story needs to be told. The production gives voice to a woman so often defined by images and archetypes, and instead presents her complex and multifaceted reality. It exemplifies the mission of WWTNS? to present new angles on stories that have been misrepresented.
The Fringe workshop was featured in the Daily Mail, The Evening Times and the Scotsman , in addition to STV and BBC Radio, and was shortlisted for the Holden Street Theatre Award. The run at the SEG Hub in Providence, RI was featured in Motif Magazine and The Providence Journal. Critics said the production was “beautifully played,” “smart” and “powerful and unapologetic.” The cast includes Clements and fellow Co-Artistic Directors J orge Morales Picó, Sam Hood Adrain, and Ana Cristina Schuler as Princess Diana. Director Wednesday Sue Derrico heads up a team of international designers including Mairi MacInnes (costumes/set) and A dam Welsh (sound/video).
