On October 26, 2017, the CCOC will kick off its momentous 50th anniversary season with a celebratory concert at Canada’s foremost opera house, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The company has shared the stage with countless opera stars over the years and the company is happy to invite some of the best Canada has to offer to share the occasion.
Internationally renowned tenor and radio personality Ben Heppner will host, with a stunning line-up of guest artists including CCOC alumni Alana Bridgewater, Karina Gauvin and Ben Carlson with Ted Baerg, Measha Brueggergosman, Andrew Haji, Simone Osborne and Krisztina Szabo.
CCOC Music Director Teri Dunn will conduct the choruses of the CCOC while former music and artistic directors John Tuttle and Ann Cooper Gay will lead a chorus of the company’s many alumni.
The program will feature some of the most beautiful operatic, choral and popular music ever composed, including music from Carmen, Die Zauberflöte and Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Canadian music will be well represented with excerpts from Robertson Davies’ and Derek Holman’s Dr. Canon’s Cure and John Greer’s The Snow Queen.
On the occasion of the company’s golden anniversary, the CCOC’s Artists Director Dean Burry, shared his excitement about this major milestone saying: “This isn’t just a concert, it is a reunion of some of the greatest talents this country has ever produced. The event will be one of the largest in the CCOC’s history and I can’t think of a more appropriate place for us to celebrate fifty years. We have always felt a part of the Canadian Opera Company family, and the Four Seasons Centre stage is where we have shared so many incredible memories. Looking back at the thirteen commissioned operas (written by some of Canada’s most impressive musical and literary figures - including Robertson Davies), the seven recordings and over two thousand alumni that have been part of the organization, it’s not hard to see the impact on the Canadian musical scene. There is so much to celebrate and this 50th Concert is going to be a night we’ll remember forever.”
About the CCOC: Founded by Ruby Mercer and Lloyd Bradshaw in 1968 to provide the children’s chorus for the Canadian Opera Company, the CCOC has gone on to become an internationally-recognized organization in the field of children’s opera. The company consists of six choruses for ages 3 to 19 and is the only permanent children’s opera company in Canada. Led by Artistic Director Dean Burry, Managing Director Ken Hall, and Music Director Teri Dunn, the company engages young people in the vibrant world of opera by offering intensive musical and dramatic training and numerous professional performing experiences. In addition to their own concerts and opera productions, members regularly perform with the Canadian Opera Company and other major professional organizations, record, and tour nationally and internationally.
