On Sept. 23rd, 2017, emerGENce Theatre will open Turtleneck, a new play by Canadian playwright Brandon Crone, that explores sex, power struggles, and gender dynamics.
Turtleneck, focuses on Vicki, a woman trying to escape from a dark past that has come back to haunt her. In an attempt to distance herself from a destructive addiction, Vicki is befriended by a rehabilitation worker named Darcy. But by befriending Darcy, Vicki is accidentally introduced to Darcy’s sex-obsessed older brother, Brian, who develops an all consuming lust for Vicki. Thrown into the mix is Louis, a quirky and shy young man with a crush on Vicki, and Roy, a mysterious figure from Vicki’s dark past. Darcy, Brian, Louis, and Roy clash in an attempt to try and stake their claim over Vicki, resulting in a turbulent evening with devastating results.
Brandon Crone’s play focuses on pushing boundaries and dealing with challenging subject matter, often using side splitting humour to confront delicate or taboo topics. The show runs from Sept. 23rd to Oct. 8th at Tree of Life Theatre, located at 888 Dupont Street.
Turtleneck first premiered in Toronto at hub 14 with safeword.theatre in 2013. The production was met with many accolades from a variety of outlets including, NOW Magazine, Mooney On Theatre, and My Entertainment World. Crone’s writing in particular was the subject of great acclaim, with Mooney on Theatre writing “he has a special skill for dialogue, for capturing the essence of his complex characters through their language.” The reviewer later went on to say that “I love the play. I’m tempted to position Turtleneck among my top three favourite plays I’ve seen in Toronto. It is something very special. I recommend Turtleneck to anyone into theatre that grips you and doesn’t let you loose”.
emerGENce Theatre first staged Turtleneck at this year’s Storefront Fringe Festival in Kingston, ON, where it was met with great praise and acclaim. The company is excited to be revisiting the play again and to finally be able to share their production with Toronto audiences. This is emerGENce Theatre’s third show. Their 2014 production of Never Swim Alone earned awards from NOW Magazine for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Direction.
