Factory Theatre is proud to present BANG BANG, a Factory commissioned world premiere from Dora Award-winning playwright Kat Sandler (Mustard), January 27 – February 18, 2018.
When a Black police officer shoots an unarmed Black youth, a white playwright uses the incident as inspiration for his new hit play, except he doesn’t exactly stay true to the facts. Now, a story that he tore from the headlines is being adapted into a major movie without the consent of the officer involved. Wary of the backlash he might receive, the playwright decides to visit the officer's home. BANG BANG questions the impact of what it means to be “inspired by true events” while finding the humour in a humourless situation.
Kat Sandler is an award-winning writer, director and Artistic Director of Theatre Brouhaha creating “theatre for the HBO Generation.” A playwright of punchy, pop-culture contemporary stories, Sandler has written over fifteen original plays, directing thirteen of them including the critically-acclaimed Late Night, produced at the ZoomerPlex. Her Dora Award-winning Mustard is returning to Tarragon Theatre in January 2018. BANG BANG, Sandler’s Factory debut, will also be the first audio recording for the new season of PlayME podcast.
The powerhouse ensemble features Dora-Award winning Sébastien Heins (Brotherhood: The Hip Hopera / b current, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play / Outside the March) as the Disney-child-star-turned-dramatic-actor set to star in the new film; Dora Award-winning Jeff Lillico (Of Human Bondage, Spoon River / Soulpepper) as Tim, the playwright on a misguided quest to make change; Dora Award-nominated Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah (Cloud / Scapegoat Collective, Prince Hamlet / Why Not Theatre) as Lila, the police officer who just wants to tell her own story; Dora Award-winning Karen Robinson (Prince Hamlet / Why Not Theatre, Schitt’s Creek / CBC TV) as her mother, keen on protecting her daughter at all costs; and Gemini Award-winning Richard Zeppieri (carried away on the crest of a wave / Tarragon Theatre, Murdoch Mysteries / CBC TV), as a straight-shooting body guard.
Fact and fiction. Actions and consequences. Sandwiches and rum. BANG BANG.
