Written by acclaimed Canadian playwright Joan Macleod, Jewel is inspired by a tragic event in Canadian history: The sinking of the Ocean Ranger oil rig off the coast of Newfoundland, during a brutal North Atlantic storm on Valentines Day 1982. To honour the 36th anniversary of this tragedy, Shotgun Juliet presents Jewel to celebrate the enduring spirit of love.
With Jewel, Joan Macleod presents us with a widow: Marjorie Clifford. It’s Valentines night 1985, the three year anniversary since her husband’s death. Marjorie is alone in her trailer in Northern Alberta. In a Valentine filled with humour and gratitude, Marjorie explores the strength of love and constraint of grief, in search of the freedom to move forward.
