Macbeth, directed by Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino and featuring Ian Lake in the title role, was the runaway hit of the 2016 theatre season. It has been praised as “a thrilling terror” (Globe and Mail), “a bold and brutal take on the Scottish King’s tragic tale” (Toronto Star), and “a brilliant, terrifying show” that leaves people “gasping in the dark” (Chicago Tribune). The film, directed by Shelagh O’Brien and produced by Barry Avrich, builds on the intensity of the live production. It has claimed a CSA nomination for Best Variety or Entertainment Special.
Meanwhile, on March 3 Stratford Festival HD’s latest installment hits cinemas with the Stratford production of Romeo and Juliet at select Cineplex theatres nationwide. Film director Barry Avrich and stage director Scott Wentworth bring fresh life to the beloved tale of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in this “funny, moving, thrilling” production (National Post) of Romeo and Juliet, starring Antoine Yared and Sara Farb as the “youthful, impulsive, and vivacious” title characters (Toronto Star). On April 22 Timon of Athens will screen at select Cineplex theatres nationwide. Stage director Stephen Ouimette’s Timon of Athens gets a glorious treatment on the screen by director Barry Avrich. This rarely produced Shakespearean treasure tells the story of Timon, a tremendously generous nobleman, who lavishes gifts upon his friends and entertains in high style. He’s the most popular man in Athens – until his money runs out. Joseph Ziegler, “a superb, nuanced actor … amazes” in the title role (The Buffalo News), with “Ben Carlson, Michael Spencer-Davis and Tim Campbell bringing weight and clarity to their secondary roles” (Toronto Star). Mr. Ouimette has set Shakespeare’s timeless story in the 21st century and “the themes fit well in a self-absorbed world of virtual reality goggles, cellphone selfies and vacuous club music” (Postmedia). This stirring production from the Stratford Festival is both “captivating and heartbreaking” (Broadway World).
