Tosca
Rivaling the splendor of Franco Zeffirelli’s Napoleonic-era sets and costumes, Sir David McVicar’s “smashing new production” (Huffington Post) of Giacomo Puccini’s classic melodrama features a cast led by Sonya Yoncheva in the title role with Vittorio Grigolo as her passionate lover, Cavaradossi. Following on the heels of his smouldering performance in the Met’s production of Romeo and Juliet last year, in Tosca, The Wall Street Journal declares this pair as “youthful, ardent, and innocent…their duets electric, their kisses hot and numerous.” The production, “a grand triumph” according to the Huffington Post, also stars Zeljko Lucic with Emmanuel Villaume conducting.
When and Where to Experience “Tosca”
Audiences across Canada can experience Tosca live from the Lincoln Centre in New York at select Cineplex theatres across Canada on January 27 at 12:55 pm ET. The production is sung in Italian with English subtitles, with encore performances scheduled in select cities on February 17, 26 and 28.
L’Elisir d’Amore
Gaetano Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore has been among the most consistently popular operatic comedies for almost two centuries. The story, set in a small village in rural Italy, deftly combines comic archetypes with a degree of genuine character development that is rare in works of this type.
Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met as the feisty Adina, opposite Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his ravishing “Una furtive lagrima.” Bartlett Sher’s production is charming, with skillful comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.
