Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is thrilled to welcome Cottagers and Indians this February. The comedic, poignant play written by Drew Hayden Taylor opens in Tarragon Theatre’s Extraspace from February 13 - March 25, 2018 (opening February 21).
This sincere and pragmatic look at conflicts between traditional First Nations water usage and cottage property owners is more relevant than ever with the current disputes over harvesting of wild rice on Pigeon, Chemong and Buckhorn Lakes in the Kawarthas.
In Cottagers and Indians, audiences witness an example of the clash of cultures as it’s taken place for several centuries. Based on real events, a member of a Kawartha First Nation struggles to maintain his wild rice crops in the lake he shares with property owners. They fear a decrease in enjoyable recreation and property value, he fears a loss of his culture and his right to plant wild rice.
Taylor displays a deft hand, bringing together satire and a sharp commentary, working to bring to light a significant conflict in an engaging and approachable format.
“We’re thrilled to bring Cottagers and Indians to the Tarragon,” notes Tarragon’s Artistic Director, Richard Rose. “Drew Hayden Taylor’s writing is engaging, entertaining, and has a very Canadian satirical form, we can’t wait for Tarragon audiences to experience it.”
Cottagers and Indians features an incredible two person cast of Herbie Barnes (THEATRE: The Public Theatre, Native Earth Performing Arts, Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Magnetic North Theatre Festival; TV: “The Rez”, “Murdoch Mysteries”; FILM: Dance Me Outside) and Tracey Hoyt (Gemini Award-nominee; THEATRE: The Second City). Written by Drew Hayden Taylor (multiple nominations for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction, Dora Award for Outstanding New Play for Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth, Chalmers Award-winner, Gemini Award nominee; THEATRE: previous Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts) with direction by Patti Shaughnessy (THEATRE: Red Sky Performance, Magnus Theatre, The Rez Sisters National Theatre in Nuuk, Greenland).
Cottagers and Indians runs February 13 - March 25, 2018, opening on Wednesday, February 21.
