Obsidian Theatre is pleased to announce the Canadian premiere of hang from the awarding winning UK playwright, screenwriter and director debbie tucker green, on stage February 6-25 at the Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs.
Co-directed by Obsidian Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Philip Akin and multi-Dora-nominated choreographer Kimberley Rampersad, hang is an unflinching, troubling story about the struggle between crime and punishment, justice and revenge that goes to the heart of a woman’s unthinkable choice.
“debbie tucker green has created a parallel world in which violence takes on new meaning,” said Akin. “In this place, society has embraced choices that most people would consider inconceivable or even ridiculous.”
According to Rampersad, the compelling nature of hang is in its slow drip release of key facts. “I marvel at debbie tucker green's ability to reveal crucial information deliberately, almost excruciatingly over the course of the play. As the play worked on me, I hope the audience is also drawn to use their experience and imagination to piece the story together."
The cast for hang is comprised of a trio of well-versed actors including Sarah Afful who plays Three, Zoé Doyle as One and Vladimir Alexis as Two.
Praise for hang:
“debbie tucker green’s play is as clean as a just-wiped knife—the kind of play where you find yourself, at the final blackout, holding your breath.”
“What a stark, probing evening this is: aptly efficient at only 70 minutes, but poised and poetic, with such pitch-black humour.”
