Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is thrilled to announce the Toronto premiere of Bunny this February. The play, written by Hannah Moscovitch and directed by Sarah Garton Stanley, was commissioned by the Stratford Festival and premiered there to great acclaim in 2016. Bunny runs in Tarragon’s Mainspace February 21 - April 1, 2018 (opening February 28).
Aroused by inappropriate love, a young woman discovers the power of her own allure. Ever the outsider, she struggles with the social acceptable only to find herself increasingly alone in her desires. Dangerous and disorienting, Bunny is a play about repressive social convention, personal inhibition and desire unleashed.
At its core, Bunny is an exploration of contemporary love and sex, an exercise in gaining insight into female sexuality and desire amidst the repressive social conventions plaguing people consciously and unconsciously. In a style Moscovitch has come to be known for, “Bunny” (Maev Beaty) offers a confessional monologue punctuated by the appearances of men she’s had encounters with.
But the dialogue isn’t limited to her relationships with male partners. “Bunny” reflects on the judgement and shame she encountered from other women at a formative stage in her life. Her reflections ultimately bring to light the inexplicable connection between sexual desire, sexual shame and a need to overcome the binary.
“Hannah Moscovitch’s sharp writing in Bunny takes audiences on a journey of introspection about sexual repression,” notes Richard Rose. “We’re so pleased to offer Tarragon audiences another work of Hannah's.”
The Toronto premiere of Bunny sees the return of Maev Beaty (Multi Dora Award-winner, Co-Artistic Director of Sheep No Wool, Artist-in-Residence at the Theatre Centre; THEATRE: Tarragon’s Wide Awake Hearts, Stratford Festival, Soulpepper, Canadian Stage, Theatre Passe Muraille) in the lead role, alongside Cyrus Lane (THEATRE: Soulpepper, Stratford Festival, Ross Petty Productions, Theatre Passe Muraille, Young People’s Theatre; TV: “Murdoch Mysteries”), Matthew Edison (THEATRE: Tarragon’s An Enemy of the People, Sextet, The Real World?, Forests, Midnight Sun, Soulpepper, Canadian Stage, Coal Mine; FILM & TV: “Republic of Doyle”, “Murdoch Mysteries”), Gabriella Albino (THEATRE: YES Theatre, Young People’s Theatre), Tony Ofori (THEATRE: Harold Green Theatre), Jesse LaVercombe (THEATRE: Tarragon’s Sequence, National Arts Centre, Driftwood Theatre’s 2017 Playwright-in-Residence; TV: “American Gods”, “Salvation”) and Rachel Cairns (Tarragon’s The Summoned, Bard on the Beach’s The Cymbeline, Hamlet, Twelfth Night).
Written by a Tarragon favourite, Hannah Moscovitch (2017 Tarragon Playwright-in-Residence, 2017 Siminovitch Prize nominee, Governor General’s Award nominee, 2015 Dora Award for Outstanding New Play for Infinity, 2010 Dora Award for Outstanding Production for In This World; THEATRE: Tarragon’s East of Berlin, This is War, Infinity, Stratford Festival, National Arts Centre, Banff Centre, Factory Theatre, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre) and directed by Sarah Garton Stanley (Associate Artistic Director at National Arts Centre, former Artistic Director of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 2016 Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas’ Elliot Hayes Award, Siminovitch Prize nominee; THEATRE: Stratford Festival, Canadian Stage, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre).
Bunny runs February 21 - April 1, 2018, opening on Wednesday, February 28.
