This brand new production, developed by a leading team of artists at the forefront of Canadian theatre, is the first in the Grand’s new play development program, COMPASS.
By award-winning playwright Trina Davies, SILENCE uncovers the life of the remarkable woman often overshadowed by one of Canada’s most important historic figures, Alexander Graham Bell. This beautiful (and true) love story follows Mabel Gardiner Hubbard, who was deaf, as she meets and falls in love with the future inventor of the telephone.
Visionary director Peter Hinton (Shaw Festival’s An Octoroon and Alice in Wonderland; Canadian Opera Company’s Louis Riel) returns to the Grand to tell Mabel’s story through an immersive experience, using innovative design, staging, and projection to represent the world from her perspective.
“When Mabel Hubbard gained her deafness, she discovered in herself untapped resources and skills, and creativity and power that many women of her social class and standing never would. Silence chronicles a history that is beautiful and painful and immerses the audience in the imagined experience of what Mabel heard and saw in her lover and her time.” - Peter Hinton
The creative team is joined by an acclaimed cast starring the Shaw Festival’s Tara Rosling as Mabel, Graham Cuthbertson as Alexander Graham Bell, Michael Spencer-Davis, and actors from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
Grand Theatre dedicates the World Premiere of Silence to Iris Turcott, a London born dramaturg who worked on the development of this play. Iris was known as an extraordinary champion of new work for stages across Canada.
