Butcher, a dramatic thriller by Nicolas Billon, challenges audiences to question what’s right and what’s wrong. Theatre Kingston has gathered a cast of internationally known Kingston talent, Jacob James, Greg Wanless, Zoe Sweet, Jane Marlo Nerenberg and Broadway star Douglas Harmsen. To guide this ferocious piece is Theatre Kingston’s past Artistic Producer and award-winning director in her own right, Kathryn MacKay.
Butcher begins when a mysterious old man is dropped off at a police station, wearing a foreign military uniform, a Santa hat, and a meat hook dangling around his neck. Impaled on the end of the hook is the business card of a lawyer with the words "arrest me" on it. At 3 a.m. the lawyer is called to the police station to explain his relationship to the mysterious man, who only speaks Lavinian (a Slavic-sounding language invented by two University of Toronto linguists for the play). As the lawyer, a police officer, and a translator struggle to unravel the truth, they uncover a past that won’t stay buried. The play comes with a warning that it contains depictions of extreme violence and coarse language, but Nicolas Billon, the playwright, says the play asks the question 'How we can balance the need for peace with the desire for justice?
“I’m interested in the idea of what we perceive as justice - is it purely a civilizing construct or do we instinctively crave it?” Wonders Kathryn McKay, “Can a cycle of centuries- long ethnic feuds be halted by a new generation in a new land?”
This edge of your seat thriller asks if can we balance our need for peace with a desire for justice. We’ll let you decide. Butcher, Baby Grand Theatre OCT 26 - NOV 11.
