Theatre Erindale’s transformative season continues with William Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1 and Part 2, tackled by our 3rd year class.
It’s 1403 and recently crowned Henry IV (having usurped the throne from Richard II) is already facing down rebel- lion, discontent, and an unruly son. In these two history plays, Shakespeare follows the two Henries, father and son, as the older comes to recognize who his heir truly is and the younger demonstrates what it takes to be a king: playfulness, guile, a knack for strategy, and a lot of ruthlessness.
Wallis says “Henry IV is Shakespeare’s opus of political and personal redemption, and the rejection of both unworthy and ingrained parts of ourselves. The story of Prince Hal, and his duel father figures, the Lord of Misrule Falstaff, and the usurping Henry IV, has tasked audiences and scholars with understanding the nature of leadership, chivalry, justice, and betrayal. This young group of exciting, talented, hardworking actors have brought so much energy to this two-part story of Medieval England that feels ever so close to our social reality now.”
