Theatre Aquarius is thrilled to present Florian Zeller’s The Father, a daring, often funny and ultimately heartbreaking portrait of a man fighting a losing battle with dementia. Zeller, who has been called "the most exciting new theatre writer of our time", won the Molière Award for this self-described “tragic farce”, making its Canadian Premiere on our stage.
The title role in The Father is André, an 80 year old former Engineer… or possibly a former tap dancer, depending on when you ask him. Theatre Aquarius is privileged to have Canadian theatre veteran Eric Peterson in this important role. Peterson, best known to many outside the theatre for starring in three major Canadian television success stories, Street Legal, Corner Gas and This is Wonderland, is uniquely able to carry the audience on this dizzying and disorienting journey, seeing the world through his eyes as it crumbles around him. The play has been called “an astonishingly unguarded play about the cruelties of love and the limits of patience, and the way child-parent relationships become inverted as old age creeps up and mugs us” (the Guardian, UK)
The Father is written by Florian Zeller, Translated by Christopher Hampton and Directed by Theatre Aquarius Artistic Director Ron Ulrich. The Set and Costume Design is by Doug Paraschuck, Lighting Design by Martin Conboy and Sound Design by Ranil Sonnadara. The show stars Eric Peterson, with Tess Degenstein, Raquel Duffy, Molly Kidder, Matthew MacFadzean and Brad Rudy. The Stage Manager is Chantal Hayman, with ASM Erika Morey, and Apprentice Stephanie Karen Taylor.
The Father will run from October 24 – November 10, 2018, with performances Tuesdays – Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1pm. Tickets range from $30 - $85. Opening Night is October 26 at 7:30pm. Tickets may be ordered online at www.theatreaquarius.org or by calling the box office at 905.522.7529 (toll free 1.800.465.7529), or in person at the Dofasco Centre for the Arts, 190 King William Street, Hamilton.
