Citadel + Compagnie proudly presents the inaugural Bright Nights seasonal triple bill Citadel Dance Mix 2018, November 21–24 & November 28–December 1, 2018, at The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance. Three of Toronto’s most exciting and sought-after dance creators will present three electrifying works: Lady Baby choreographed by DA Hoskins follows a woman — her myth, her sexuality, her stories — in a powerful exploration of identity. Allison Cummings’ As she shall obtain such command of her mass vein passageways is the unwinding of a dancer and the desire for control, and Tori Mehaffey presents the world premiere of Avoidance, a new commission by Citadel + Compagnie for Bright Nights.
“Citadel Dance Mix celebrates exploration and experimentation,” says Citadel + Compagnie’s Artistic Director Laurence Lemieux. “I encourage audiences to uncover the contrasting beauty of these three distinct works. The inaugural iteration features Toronto’s most exciting choreographers demonstrating real variety and risk-taking. I am delighted with this bold program as it becomes a space for unique visions and explorations to transpire. Audiences are invited to enjoy these radical works presented on stage by some of Toronto’s very best.”
The blend of diverse work is a unique offering that Citadel + Compagnie achieves through its commitment to curate Bright Nights specifically to highlight the intimate nature of The Citadel, and to feature distinctive artists whose refined creations boldly push the boundaries of Toronto dance.
Hailed by NOW Magazine as “a heartbreaking revelation” and an “enormous emotional force,” Hoskins’ 2008 Lady Baby was inspired by D.H. Lawrence’s best-known novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover. This captivating interdisciplinary dance work follows one woman through an exploration of relationships, self-image, and created personae. Lady Baby poses the question, is the woman’s identity hers alone? Or is she simply an idea the audience has formed of her?
As she shall obtain such command of her mass vein passageways is a world premiere by the fearless Cummings. Performed by Toronto Dance Theatre alumna Kaitlin Standeven, this is an unraveling and despairing duet between a dancer and her desire to control. The piece traces shifts in power within the body, challenging the conventional control dancers execute with each initiated movement. Rather than striving for superficial beauty, Cummings presents a work that confronts power imbalances.
Citadel + Compagnie has commissioned a new quartet piece by emerging dance artist Mehaffey, titled Avoidance. The work channels the fear that arises when traumatic events we have distanced ourselves from begin to resurface. Mehaffey brings a fresh new voice and unbridled energy to this audacious program with her exploration of dismissal and fear.
