Are you a playwright, choreographer, composer or performance creator?
Were you born in 1995?
Then we want you.
5×25 is an unprecedented national competition launching the careers of emerging playwrights, composers, choreographers and creators who were born in the year that Nighswimmming was founded: 1995. It’s a 5-year creative project started in 2015, in which we seek out proposals from artists born in 1995, then commission one annually until 2020.
Now heading into its fourth year, Nightswimming’s 5×25 is open to writers, choreographers, composers, designers and activists who love performance and have an idea and a project they want to create. We’re open to anything that happens in a space with an audience.
To apply to 5×25, see Application Guidelines at:

Deadline is 5pm EST on Friday November 30th. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted in the new year.
In 2018 we launched our third 5×25 project by commissioning Vancouver theatre maker Tai Amy Grauman to create her new play Her Name Is Marie. Our first 5×25 commission, Rhiannon Collett is continuing her work on her play WASP, and our second 5×25 commission, xLq’s 4inXchange, recently premiered at Toronto’s Summerworks Festival where it won the NOW Magazine Audience Choice Award.
“5×25 was a direct catalyst for our success – beyond just receiving the funds to see it through, Nightswimming’s belief in our vision gave us the confidence we needed as emerging artists to present our work on a national stage.” – xLq
“It has been incredible to have Brian and Brittany’s support throughout this process. The 5×25 commission has given me the freedom, time and resources to create my play in my own way while also being able to reach Brian and Brittany whenever I need. I’m looking forward to the next 4 years with Nightswimming!” – Tai Amy Grauman
5×25 has been a wonderful opportunity to hear about projects being created by artists from across Canada. We’ve commissioned three amazing projects and have been thrilled to support Rhiannon, xLq and Tai with mentorship, travel support, workshops, and collaboration through conversation and dramaturgy. We’ve learned a lot from each of these artists and are thrilled to celebrate their achievements. This year our applicants must be 23 and we can’t wait to see what projects they want to make and what stories they need to tell. – Brian Quirt, Nightswimming Artistic Director
