Now in its seventh season, Toronto independent opera company Opera 5 presents the first entry in a new series of staged vocal chamber music entitled Open Chambers, which is planned to be a yearly production along with their main stage presentations. The first of the series, entitled Open Chambers: Hindemith & Shostakovich will take place November 28 - December 1, 2018 at Factory Theatre - Studio Theatre at 125 Bathurst St. It will feature Hindemith's Oboe Sonata and Die Serenaden and Shostakovich's Seven Romances on poems by Alexander Blok.
“Opera 5 has become known for our commitment to storytelling,” says Opera 5 General Director Rachel Krehm, “and this is why we want to start staging vocal chamber music. The vocal chamber music repertoire is vast and full of exciting gems, which are packed with drama and emotion. The works we have picked lend themselves to staging both singers and musicians. Anyone who has been to a chamber music show before will know about the play between musicians. Here, our director Patrick Hansen will explore the interplay between words, musicians, and singers in order to magnify this connection, which will tell a story to the audience.”
In Factory Theatre's intimate setting the audience will be up close for extra impact of this connection-based show. Opera 5 will be playing with the presumptions of staged music, and illustrate how a performance of chamber music can be augmented by involving all the musicians in its staging, resulting in a maximized experience.
The cast of Open Chambers: Hindemith & Shostakovich features National Arts Centre Orchestra Concertmaster Yosuke Kawasaki on both violin and viola, American Quartet cellist Wolfram Koessel, Ithaca College piano professor, Vadim Serebryany, Kingston Symphony Orchestra principal oboe Melissa Scott, COC ensemble alumna Jacqueline Woodley, soprano and General Director of Opera 5, Rachel Krehm, soprano. The show will be directed by Patrick Hansen, Director of Opera studies at McGill University.
Opera 5 is a member of Indie Opera T.O and is known for creative programming and execution of its mainstage productions, and for the popular web series titled Opera Cheats, which deconstructs opera plots and opera-going rules with a humorous twist.
