Stage Door News
- After two sold-out runs in Vancouver,
The Artillery Collective
is beyond excited to be collaborating with the
Next Stage Theatre Festival
and the
Ga Ting Company
to bring
Minh Ly’s
unique bilingual tale to Toronto. Using both Cantonese and English
dialogue with surtitles, this kitchen sink drama transforms into a
surreal guilt-storm of epic proportions. The Toronto premiere is
directed by the incomparable
Aaron Jan,
and runs from January 9-20, 2019 at the Factory Theatre
Studio.
Ga Ting,
Cantonese for “family”, is a powerful and emotionally charged story
about an immigrant Chinese couple (Richard
Tse and Loretta Yu)
coming to terms with the death of their son, Kevin. When Kevin’s
Caucasian boyfriend Matthew (Anne
with an E’s
Stephen Tracey)
is invited for dinner after the funeral, the evening devolves into
a fiery cultural and generational clash, in which all must grapple
with who Kevin was… and who they are.
The Artillery Collective
is committed to producing thought provoking work that ignites a
conversation with our audience that extends beyond the theatre
walls. At our core, we value work that honours, respects and gives
voice to Queer artists, People of Colour and Womxn. The AC is run
by co-artistic producers
Eric Morin,
Kyle Travis Young
and
Ariana Marquis.
The Ga Ting Company is producing partners
Minh Ly
and
Neta J. Rose.
Our dynamic and diverse creative team consists of
Steph Raposo, Logan Cracknell and Jung Hye Kim.
Minh Ly
is a Canadian actor/writer based out of Toronto, ON. He trained at
the Studio 58 acting conservatory in Vancouver, BC.
Ga Ting
is his first professionally produced full-length play. It premiered
in 2014 in Richmond, BC, and had a second mounting in 2016,
produced by frank Theatre, and presented by The Cultch in
Vancouver, BC; both productions garnered sold-out houses.
The seed of Ga Ting was Minh’s effort to help promote diverse
representation onstage. He was intrigued by an imagined an image of
a middle-aged Asian couple sitting with a Caucasian man. Why are
these people together? The story of Ga Ting was his answer to that
question.
