After performances in Montreal and New York, experimental performance collective Other Families brings their mixed media play Deer Blood to the Toronto stage November 30 and December 1st. The show fuses theatre, live music and projection works to tell a unique story of two lovers in the final moments of their relationship.
Al and Lu have been in love for a while. Now they find themselves
at the centre of a swirling mixed-media spectacle in Canadian
performance collective Other Families’
Deer Blood,
the first show in their
Endless Love
theatre series.
When Al and Lu fell in love they were perfect for each other. Lu, a
hunter, and Al, a wild animal soul, seemed destined to be together.
After Al betrays Lu the two must sort through their broken memories
in a single night at Lu’s family cabin. There they will finally
decide if they are meant for each other or meant to forever lose
each other’s trail.
Deer Blood
is a story of transformation and pursuit. The genre-bending piece
witnesses Lu and Al’s relationship as through a prism, stitching
their larger-than-life personalities and love/hate relationship
into a unique and unforgettable event.
The show is helmed by Other Families as the first offering in their
new theatre series,
Endless Love.
Other Families built a name for themselves as an experimental music
and performance group in Toronto, where they’ve been working since
2010. Now, led by Other Families member and Stratford Festival
alumnus Josh Johnston,
Endless Love
takes the group’s experimental aesthetic into the theatre
space.
“We want to fuse stage narrative with different performance, story,
and media types,” say Johnston and fellow Other Families member,
Zach Buck. “We hope to welcome the audiences and artists involved
in Endless Love to a different kind of spectacle, one that affects
them in a totally new way. Not just theatre, but something bigger,
grander, more endless”.
Now,
after workshop performances in Montreal in June,
Deer Blood
and
Endless Love
are going on tour for the first time. The show will stop in
Brooklyn for performances on November 10th and 11th, and Toronto on
November 30th and December 1st.
This run of Deer Blood will feature performances by Montreal and
Toronto based actors Katharine King and Josh Johnston. The show
will be scored and supported live by the Other Families musical
ensemble, and has received additional assistance from Montreal
dramaturge
Michelle Rambharose.
