Direct from a
sold-out run
in Edmonton, this
award-winning production
makes its Toronto debut at
Theatre Passe Muraille, November 15—December 2.
Anchoring the production is a powerful performance by trans
non-binary performance artist
Julie “Niuboi” Ferguson
in the lead role of “Kes”.
When Kes poses as a boy and embarks on an intimate relationship
with another girl, it leads to devastating effects both legally and
personally.
SCORCH
explores the controversial subject of “gender identity fraud”
prosecutions by giving voice to the trans and gender variant youth
whose lives they often leave shattered.
Julie “Niuboi” Ferguson
is an award-winning trans non-binary performance artist. They were
recently awarded the
Nordic & Cloutier Family Innovation
and were first runner up for the 2018 Vue Weekly Magazine’s
Champion of the Arts Award. Their work combines visual art,
movement, and theatrical practice to create live performance,
video, installation, and cabaret works that explore queerness,
futurism, and joy.
Their self-created works
Glass Washrooms
(theatre),
The Milk Bar
(film),
Antiquation
(installation), and PLASTIC (politi-pop) have been presented by
Found Festival, The Chinook Series, Mile Zero Dance, Odd Wednesday,
and Nextfest.
“To
see trans people on stage is so powerful for me as an audience
member. Representation matters.
SCORCH may
be written by a cisgender person, but it presents a transgender
story in a truthful and heartfelt way,”
says Ferguson.
“I deeply relate to the character of Kes, and I am excited for
audiences to see a dramatic trans character on stage played by a
trans performer.”
