See an exclusive preview! On November 17th, Native Earth Performing Arts presents selected scenes from Shanawdithit at Weesageechak Begins to Dance 31! Shanawdithit premieres in May 2019 in Toronto and June 2019 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Featuring performances by Marion Newman (Shanawdithit), Rebecca Cuddy (Spirit Chorus/Kwe), Aria Evans (Dancer), Clarence Frazer (Cormack), Keith Klassen (Peyton) & Evan Korbut (Spirit Chorus), this work tells the story of a woman believed to be the last of the Beothuk, through the art she created in her final months.
Following the performance, join Spy Dénommé-Welch, Michael Mori, Yvette Nolan, and Marion Newman for a panel discussion on Indigeneity and opera, abandoning the exotic for the representative opera of today.
Weesageechak is an annual development festival of indigenous works from across Turtle Island and the world. Taking place over two weeks in Native Earth's Aki Studio, the festival brings together emerging, mid-career, and established artists to develop and showcase contemporary Indigenous theatre, dance, opera and multidisciplinary creations. The festival offers audience an opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of contemporary Indigenous art. We're honoured to be a part of this vitally important festival and looking forward to give audiences an inside look into a history-changing, landmark world premiere.
