Canadian Stage is thrilled to give Toronto audiences a chance to see the smash-hit Stratford Festival Production of Molière’s timeless satire, TARTUFFE, in their own backyard! Featuring the amazing original Stratford cast, TARTUFFE is on stage at the Bluma Appel Theatre, January 13 to 27, 2019.
This mad-cap, wickedly hilarious production of TARTUFFE has been given a slick, contemporary update that will have audiences in stitches. Deftly exploring political and religious hypocrisy and how truth becomes blurred in the quest for power, Molière’s once-banned comedy is as scandalously relevant today as it was in 1664.
Falling under the spell of the homeless and holy-seeming Tartuffe, a wealthy bourgeois Orgon risks his estate and his family to harbour the pious-seeming vagabond. But in fact, Orgon is the one who has been taken in by the hypocrite and con artist. With Orgon – who is blind to Tartuffe’s lecherous designs on his wife – determined to marry his daughter to Tartuffe, it is up to the rest of the household to expose the fraudster. When Tartuffe finally reveals his devilish true colours, the household is thrown into chaos.
“We are thrilled to be bringing the excellence of the Stratford Festival to Toronto audiences. The enduring relevance of Moliere’s play coupled with Chris Abraham’s contemporary approach make it a must-see show this winter,” said Brendan Healy, Canadian Stage Artistic Director.
Featuring a stellar cast of Canada’s greatest stage actors, Tom Rooney, Rod Beattie, Rosemary Dunsmore, Maev Beaty, Graham Abbey, Michael Blake, E.B. Smith, Jonathan Sousa, Akosua Amo, Mercedes Morris, and Emilio Vieira,
TARTUFFE is a side-splitting and timely portrait of manipulation, power, faith, family, and faking it.
