Miles, an aspiring actor from Toronto, has relocated to rural Ontario. The actor’s theatre company is there to research country life with the hopes of developing a play. During an extended visit with two farmers Miles discovers the challenges of manual labor and inadvertently stumbles upon a secret that has been held for decades. Taking on Michael Healey’s iconic script is director Nina Lee Aquino. This production’s diverse cast - Craig Lauzon (CBS’s Air Farce), Graham Conway (Peter Pan), and Andrew Moodie (Orphan Black, The Real McCoy) – are set to bring their own takes on the Canadian classic. The Drawer Boy is a show about the stories we tell ourselves and how they shape the world around us.
A note from the company: For the past few years the company has been programing one show in our season that comes from the cannon of over six hundred plays produced by Theatre Passe Muraille. This year we are excited to bring back The Drawer Boy. For the show, playwright Michael Healey riffed on the concept of Theatre Passe Muraille’s 1972 project The Farm Show – a devised performance that saw actors from the city interacting with farmers in rural Ontario to uncover the challenges of country life – as a starting point for an intriguing script of friendship and loss. Premiering in 1999 The Drawer Boy would go on to win the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play, a Chalmers Award, and a Governor General’s Award in addition to tours across Canada and abroad.
