“There was no justice, there was just a legal outcome.” In the wake of a young woman’s disclosure of childhood sexual assault, a family presses charges. But as they put the case together, they must confront a new challenge. Grace by Jane Doe,* directed by the brilliant Andrea Donaldson, is an exquisite and heartbreaking piece of documentary theatre about the pursuit of truth and justice. This new work unflinchingly examines our legal system — its loopholes and its failures — through the lens of a playwright searching for how to share her family's story.
In the #MeToo era, Grace instigates a brutally honest and pertinent discussion about the failure of our legal system. After the success of our Consent Event Series in Fall 2017, including the smash hits Asking for It by Ellie Moon and Lo (Or Dear Mr. Wells) by Rose Napoli, Nightwood is thrilled to return to Crow’s Theatre with yet another powerful piece of feminist theatre addressing systemic power imbalance in our society.
*Faced with the conflict between sharing her family’s story and protecting their privacy, the playwright has chosen the pseudonym of Jane Doe.
