On March 10 Cineplex Events will bring Gioachino Rossini’s Semiramide live from New York City’s Metropolitan Opera to select theatres across Canada as part of The Met: Live in HD series.
First performed at Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1823, Semiramide has since swept through the music capitals of the world, enthralling audiences with its urgent, transcendentally beautiful use of melody, exhilarating drama and astonishingly vocal displays. This epic story is based in ancient Babylon, now modern-day Iraq, a kingdom that flourished between the 18th and sixth centuries BCE. Angela Meade stars in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, commander of the Assyrian army, a trouser role performed by Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green complete the all-star bel canto cast with Maurizio Benini on the podium.
Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was the world’s foremost opera composer in his day. Over the course of just two decades, he created more than 30 works, both comic and tragic, before retiring from opera composition in 1829. Semiramide, based on Voltaire’s tragedy, Semiramis, is the culmination of the Italian phase of Rossini’s monumental career.
If opera-lovers miss the live showing, guests can catch an encore show on April 21, 23, 25, 29 and May 26, 2018, at select Cineplex theatres across the country.
