The Canadian Opera Company has added a 10th performance to its much-anticipated revival of Stravinsky’s The Nightingale and Other Short Fables. Tickets are now available for May 15, in addition to April 13, 14, 22, May 1, 2, 10, 12, 13, 19, 2018.
Robert Lepage’s imaginative production sold out upon its 2009 premiere in Toronto and subsequent tour to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2011. It features colourful water puppetry, elaborate shadow figures, and flips operatic convention upside down by placing the musicians on stage and filling the orchestra pit with water.
“One of the most remarkable things about The Nightingale and Other Short Fables is its ability to evoke delight and awe in everyone who attends, regardless of their age or familiarity with opera,” says COC General Director Alexander Neef. “It was important to us, with this revival, to provide as many opportunities as we could to share this unparalleled theatrical experience.”
Internationally acclaimed Canadian soprano Jane Archibald, the COC’s Artist-in-Residence, leads a cast of established and rising stars and makes her role debut as the Nightingale. Also making role debuts are COC Ensemble Studio graduate tenor Owen McCausland as the Fisherman, who discovers the Nightingale; Moldovan bass Oleg Tsibulko as the Emperor, whose life is saved by the Nightingale; and Lindsay Ammann as Death, who threatens the Emperor. The show features the COC Orchestra, under the baton of COC Music Director Johannes Debus, and the COC Chorus led by Price Family Chorus Master Sandra Horst.
