The Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) is proud to announce the world premiere of its thirteenth original opera, The Monkiest King. Commissioned on the occasion of the CCOC’s 50th anniversary with the aid of the Ontario Arts Council, The Monkiest King follows the young Sun Wukong as he learns humility and compassion through a series of adventures, escapades and ultimately enlightenment.
This clever retelling of the Song Dynasty character is composed by the award-winning team of Alice Ping Yee Ho and Marjorie Chan and brought to life by the talented children and youth of the CCOC. The creative team also includes Stage Director Nina Lee Aquino (Factory Theatre), Music Director Teri Dunn (CCOC), Choreographer Emily Cheung (Little Pear Garden Dance Company), Set & Costume Designer Camellia Koo, and Lighting Designer Michelle Ramsay.
The 160 members of the CCOC will be accompanied by a 10-piece professional orchestra which includes both Western and Chinese instruments (including Erhu, Guzheng, Pipa and Dizi), and joined on stage by dancer Xi Yi (courtesy of Little Pear Garden Dance Company).
With this project, the Canadian Children’s Opera Company explores cultural diversity through an exciting combination of art forms. The Monkiest King is sure to charm audiences of all ages.
