Rimah Jabr was born a Muslim Palestinian, Natasha Greenblatt was born a Jewish Canadian. They met for the first time in Toronto, but have they seen each other before? Two Birds One Stone investigates the forces that push us through time and across continents to find each other.
Two Birds One Stone is a fictional documentary that investigates two artists’ crisscrossing histories. Featuring two dynamic performances from two very different performers playing dozens of characters on both sides of the wall, Two Birds One Stone asks complicated questions about identity, privilege, and home.
Producer/artist Natasha Greenblatt had this to say about the project: “Two Birds One Stone came from a friendship between myself and Rimah that formed very organically. Because we're both theatre-makers, we decided to make something together. We thought about what connects us, where we overlap, and I told her about a house my great-grandfather bought in Palestine in 1948, just as Israel was forming. She thought that might be a good place to start, and so we created Two Birds. At the heart of the play is our friendship, and the desire to work together to understand if and how collaboration might be possible.”
Producer/Artist Rimah Jabr added, "Two Birds One Stone is about the two of us, Natasha and I, and how we became friends. Our story is strongly connected to a house in Palestine that Natasha's great-grandfather bought, but never lived in. It started there from the story of that house and the possible consequences if her great-grandfather had decided to stay in that place. The play is about us, the two women who met in Toronto, but our relationship goes beyond the city of Toronto where we first decided to make a play together.”
Previously produced as part of Why Not Theatre’s RISER Project, and presented this June at Tarragon Theatre's Workspace, Two Birds… opens June 22 and runs until June 30th.
“An intimate show, sitting comfortably at the intersection of theatre and storytelling, Two Birds One Stone is a complex, and elegant telling not only of two young women exploring their histories but of Israel/Palestine politics. - My Entertainment World
