The MNjcc celebrates Toronto Pride with two presentations on June 3: Drag Queen Story Time, a participatory experience for the whole family in the morning, and later, a mesmerizing Israeli film, Melting Away with guest speaker, LGBTQI Researcher, Jonathan Alschech. On Mondays, come to the daytime music appreciation lecture series: Pieces of Music That Changed the World, with CBC Radio host and Globe & Mail music critic, Robert Harris. On June 7, music journalist Nicholas Jennings, author of Lightfoot will discuss the timeless ballads of Canadian superstar Gordon Lightfoot. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema invites you to discover the cultural luminaries and stories of hope and resilience that have shaped the Jewish-American experience. This Jewish American Life features Famous Nathan, Hava Nagila, and more. Mark your calendars for the Toronto launch of Governor General's Awards finalist David Chariandy's anticipated non-fiction debut: an intimate and profoundly beautiful meditation on the politics of race today, on June 6. Celebrate revolutionary women who changed the rules in politics, art, civil rights and beyond, such as Madonna, Anita Hill, and Fran Lebowitz with Game Changers: Inspiring Women, presented in partnership with Luminato. Royal Ontario Museum (The ROM)
Explore the future of fashion with Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, making its only Canadian debut at the ROM, Saturday, June 2. From metal umbrella ribs and magnets to 3-D printing, Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen works with an astonishing array of materials that fuse style with science and inventive technologies to create striking and mystifying haute couture. A new and original installation from Canadian artist, visionary architect, and collaborative partner Philip Beesley will be on display alongside the van Herpen exhibition, entitled Philip Beesley: Transforming Space. A combined ticket gives visitors access to both shows. Explore the hunting, burrowing, and weaving world of spiders at the North American debut of Spiders: Fear & Fascination, opening Saturday, June 16. Featuring more than 400 live and preserved specimens, cutting-edge interactive experiences, and new scientific discoveries, this awe-inspiring exhibition debunks myths about one of the most successful yet misunderstood animals on the planet. June at 918 Bathurst starts off with the Asian Community AIDS Services DRAG ON fundraiser, June 1. Friday June 8, 918 Bathurst is excited to present The Salone di Cultura: Beyond Bella. The signature event of our Director, Daniela Nardi, The Salone di Cultura will showcase the music and visual art of Italian-Canadian women creators. Join for an aperitivo, live music, and a visual art exhibition. This event also coincides with Italian Heritage Month, and so the artwork will be on display throughout June. Saturday June 23, enjoy a concert presented in partnership with Polyphonic Ground and The Batuki Music Society. Tafelmusik
The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Festival returns with a series of free concerts at venues across Toronto, June 11-23. The Baroque Summer Festival is presented in conjunction with the annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (TBSI). The festival kicks off with Opening Night at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul's Centre, June 11 at 8pm. Join the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir for an exquisite evening of baroque music, directed by Elisa Citterio and Ivars Taurins, featuring baritone William Sharp. Then stroll down Philosopher's Walk to Walter Hall in the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, for three afternoon concerts featuring TBSI faculty and participants for chamber and solo performances. The Music Gallery
The Music Gallery's last show of the 2017/18 season at 918 Bathurst features Chino Amobi, who reconnects in June as part of his North American tour. Amobi is a Richmond, Virginia-based artist of Nigerian heritage. His NON Records breaks down long-standing Eurocentric perceptions of dance and experimental music, focusing instead on musicians who are either African or of the African diaspora and letting the producers and singers have direct ownership over what they create. While "bass music" has become its own blanket term for almost any sort of club music, very little of NON is easily classifiable or delineated by genre. Opener myst milano. is a multi-disciplinary artist who came on the Toronto nightlife scene in 2016, providing dance floors with fun, upbeat sets that always stay true to milano.'s punk roots. Bata Shoe Museum
Join the Bata Shoe Museum in June to see the travelling exhibition Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes, a retrospective of one of the world's most iconic shoemakers. Accompanying the exhibit is Exclusively Manolo, a programming series which welcomes experts from a variety of backgrounds to cover topics related to the exhibition, the brand, and the man behind it. On June 4, the Museum welcomes Vanessa Mulroney and Jane Hanrahan from the brand-positioning consultancy Power of Privé as Guest Guides, who will take participants on a tour of the exhibit inspired by their perspective on the business of fashion. On June 3, the museum will host a celebration of National Indigenous History Month with an afternoon of performances by the Smoke Trail Singers, Indigenous dance demonstrations, craft activities and more, all celebrating the rich history and culture of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The Royal Conservatory of Music
Koerner Hall's 10th anniversary concert season will be announced on June 4, subscriptions go on sale June 15, and concert tickets will be on sale starting June 22. Not to be missed at the Japan Foundation, Toronto on June 6 is a lecture about a unique friendship between a Japanese bookstore owner and China's most famous 20th century writer in, A Friend in Deed: Lu Xun, Uchiyama Kanzo, and the Intellectual World of Shanghai on the Eve of War by Prof. Josh Fogel, York University. The Tokyo Before/After Photography Exhibition continues this month, featuring 80 works by classic and contemporary Japanese photographers. This month we will also be screening PRIDE Films celebrating diversity: Taboo on June 5, Hush! on June 22 and Lily Festival on June 26.An online free language course Japanese in Manga and Anime starts this month as well. Scott Pilgrim, Captain Canuck, Nelvana, and Kagagi are just a few of the thrilling Canadian comic book heroes you can explore at the Alter Ego exhibit, on display at the Toronto Reference Library's TD Gallery, May 12-July 29. Check out some of Canada's best biographical and realist comic creators, and learn about the talented Canadians behind many popular superheroes, like pioneering Superman artist Joe Shuster. The Bloor-Yorkville BIA, Toronto's destination neighbourhood for high-end boutiques, restaurants and hotels, presents the annual Summer Music in the Park music series in the Village of Yorkville Park, June 8-Sept 8. Sounds range from jazz and pop, to traditional Cuban standards, Celtic/Americana, and soulful blues.
