Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre is pleased to announce the RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwright Award, one of Canada’s most prestigious prizes for new artists with a value of $8,000 has been awarded to Toronto theatre artist and educator, Elena Belyea. The award also includes a year’s worth of dramaturgical support from Tarragon Theatre, as well as a public reading during the theatre’s annual Play Reading Week. Nominations were received from select artistic directors across Canada.
Elena Belyea is a queer playwright, performer, producer and arts educator. She is founding Artistic Director of Tiny Bear Jaws and a co-founder of the Common Ground Arts Society’s Found Festival, a site-specific multidisciplinary event now in its sixth year. Her plays have been performed across Canada and received numerous awards. Elena is a graduate of the University of Alberta and the National Theatre School of Canada (Playwriting). “The stories Elena Belyea are writing define the term 'emerging',” said Rose. “She is writing plays about people we haven’t heard from in ways we haven’t heard. Elena writes with passion and compassion about her generation and writes characters embracing the contradictions of their humanity. Tarragon is drawn to her voice, to her ideas and to what inspires her.”
